Enjoy a trip to Paris and enjoy one of the worlds most beautiful and romantic cities. Paris is in central northern France, divided neatly in two by the Seine, with 20 districts spiralling clockwise from the centre. It is known also as the ‘City of Lights’ and the ‘City of Love’. The area north of the river, the Right Bank, includes the tree-lined Avenue des Champs-Élysées, running west to the Arc de Triomphe. East of the avenue is the massive Musée du Louvre, the Centre Georges Pompidou and a lively district of museums, shops, markets and restaurants. Immediately south of the Centre Georges Pompidou on the ÃŽle de la Cité is the world-famous Notre Dame. The area south of the river, the Rive Gauche (Left Bank), is home to the city’s most prominent landmark, the Eiffel Tower. To the east, in the Saint Germain de Prés and Montparnasse districts, Paris’ famous academic and artistic areas. With such a range of attractions to visit, it’s no wonder Paris weekends and city breaks are so popular. As well as the stunning architecture including many Paris hotels, Paris is a city of food and drink, of artists, writers, fashion designers and of museums such as the Musee du Louvre with the famous “Mona Lisaâ€ン by Leonardo da Vinci. But there are many specialist museums as well. A good one for children is the Cite des Sciences et l’Industrie, this museum plus the gardens will keep them busy all day. Visit Montmartre, the highest point in Paris, and the Sacré Coeur, the famed white-domed cathedral landmark that has a panoramic view over the city. The nearby Place du Tertre has many cafés and street artists painting portraits, and is very picturesque. Of course no trip to Paris would be complete without visiting The Eiffel Tower. The tower offers the opportunity to climb or ride to the top for the best views and was designed by Gustave Eiffel in 1889, and was once the World’s tallest monument. The Notre Dame Cathedral was started in the 12th Century on the site of a Roman temple. The front façade is in three slightly unequal parts with a rose window in the central part. The two side towers have no spires but are imposing. All the front of the Church is covered with amazing stone carvings that have to be seen. The Place de la Concorde was built in the mid 18th Century. Many guillotine executions took place here including Louis XVI and many hundreds aristocrats. The Egyptian Obelisk is 3300 years old and you can go up it to enjoy more views of Paris. Finally for a different perspective on a Paris break take a boat trip along the Seine to see the sights of Paris from the water.

A trip to Paris is a trip to shopping dreamland. Paris is the world capital for fashion, food and style, and is a shopper’s paradise. As the birthplace of couture, inventor of the bra and the stiletto, the French capital is home to showcase stores of all the world’s top designers available on avenue Montaigne or rue du Faubourg-St-Honoré. Paris reveals itself in specialist boutiques, family-run food shops, belle-époque department stores with rooftop views, and rustic markets that haven’t changed in over a century. Beautiful old-style arcades – such as the galerie Vivienne or passage Jouffroy make shopping a sightseeing pleasure as well. Antiques can be found in the 7th and second-hand and rare books in the 5th. Crystal and porcelain manufacturers still dot rue de Paradis in the 10th, furniture craftsmen work on rue du Faubourg-St-Antoine, while the world’s top jewellers can be found on place Vendôme. Street chic and lifestyle outlets live side by side in the Marais and around rue Etienne-Marcel, while quirky newcomers settle in Abbesses or near Canal St-Martin. Designer labels are scattered all over the 1st, 6th and 8th. Finally, no weekend shop would be complete without a visit to one of the city’s extensive flea markets, the only place where haggling is still expected and cash, not plastic, is the payment of choice.
